The Curry Pot

Chattanoogans really love the Curry Pot. I noticed this (yes, I do occasionally notice things) and decided to try out their much-vaunted lunch buffet.

Just a couple of points to keep in mind:

1. You cannot judge a restaurant on its buffet alone. Yeah, you get to try a little of everything, but the food isn't made to order so it isn't as fresh, it isn't as hot, and there's a chance Fanny Popadopcicle has been breathing all over it. (No sneeze guard can contain her.)

2. Decor includes a moving picture of the beach.

The Curry Pot isn't just comfort Indian--it's really comfortable comfort Indian. Whereas Sitar and India Mahal attempt offer a more polished atmosphere, the Curry Pot is essentially Shoney's gone Asian and they have the lassi posters and palm tree decorations to prove it. There's no denying this restaurant is a hole in the wall.

The food is inexpensive (the lunch buffet runs $5 - $8) and there is a lot of it. The menu is quite extensive (so much that instead of listing the averages I'll let you page through it yourself) and includes the usual staples as well as a variety of South Indian dishes and Dosas. The staff are incredibly friendly, the restaurant is reasonably clean, and there is a steady influx of diners throughout lunch.

The food is definitely homey, and while it's not the best Indian food I've ever had, I'll concede that there is a much wider variety of dishes available. The Curry Pot's buffet changes daily, which is certainly incentive for repeat visits from the Hamilton lunch crowd. The food isn't as good as the offerings down the street, but it is still edible and you may even prefer the more down-home approach.

I can't recommend it over India Mahal or Sitar based on food quality. I will be returning because I want to sample their South Indian menu, but I'm in no rush. People interested in an inexpensive, casual lunch with family or friends, who aren't put off by the atmosphere, should give it a try.

I completely disagree. We've been to both other Indian Restaurants, and neither live up to this little place. (Recently on our first trip to Sitar to see what the fuss was about, I noticed its empty lunch buffet-which should've been a sign; I left there feeling unsatified, knowing CP was better).
Curry Pot brings em in cause the food is awesome. The excitement from eating here has never made me question the decor. It's cosy, and I'd rather be cosy that broke from paying too much to compensate for somebodys high rent. Also, I prefer booths to chairs.
And Joe. You can't beat Joe. He's always there, always smiling. He remembers where you like to sit. Heck, even the food seems happy here. :)
The energy is radiant in this place rather than stoic- I'd like you to visit all three back to back during lunch buffets and see if you still feel the same.

Best and most authentic Indian food in town, honestly presented. No recycled dishes (same ole-same ole) no ubiquitous all-tastes-the same red sauce, no dishonesty in serving (you get what you ordered and what is listed on the menu, not what is convenient to the server).
